Lister Mair/Gilby High School for the Deaf in Jamaica
Projects in Rotary Year 2023-2024
In 2023, the school identified modern, high speed computers as their top need. This equipment allows the school to access online learning resources, to teach marketable skills in graphic design and web coding, and to implement customized software to teach English using Jamaican Sign Language as the primary language.
We provided 15 desktop computers and 7 laptops. All have 11th or 12th generation Intel processors, high speed graphics cards and solid state hard drives. We also provided digital projectors and ceiling mounts for use in the classrooms.
The school had shared an internet connection with 2 other local schools. After the donation of new computers, the internet connection was upgraded to a high speed (500 Mbs), dedicated access point. The school now has a fast internet service and a facility-wide WIFI network.
In addition to computer equipment, we also provided 2-way radios for enhanced security and donated two sewing machines for one of the entrepreneurship classes.
Projects in Rotary Year 2024-2025
Our plans for 2024-2025 include a variety of improvements to the school’s facilities.
As a result of drought conditions in Jamaica and an unreliable municipal water system, we have provided a 1,000 gallon freshwater storage for the school.
We will renovate a shower facility for the female students which has fallen into disrepair. PE classes are held on the soccer field in the hot sun. The students need a place to shower after the classes.
We plan to install mini-split air conditioning units in 6 offices. We also plan to install 15 high volume fans in classrooms.
We will construct a roof over an external stairway to the second floor classrooms. During the rainy season, Jamaica can experience torrential downpours making the stair unusable. The roof will be built to resist both hurricanes and earthquakes.
The school has a soccer field behind the main facility. The approach to the field is uphill and grassy. We plan to construct a wheelchair ramp to the soccer field, allowing access for all students at the school.
Future Projects: We have plans to renovate the school’s multi-purpose room / assembly hall. These include repairs to the roof, installing a new ceiling, new lights and ceiling fans, rewiring all electrical circuits and installing a new tile floor.
